PENCIL SHARPENERS - Chapter 10
poster design, 2025
22 artists were invited to design a poster inspired by the 22 chapter titles from the text ‘Pictures at a Polish Exhibition’ by British writer Adrian Hornsby. The artists/designers were not given the text of the chapter, only the title.
“Upon hearing the two words ‘pencil sharpener’ I immediately started thinking about all the things I could potentially sharpen. Why limit myself to pencils?! Simply sharpening the end of something creates an expectation of purpose. By sharpening a carrot, I could avoid any usefulness and leap into the realm of the absurd. I chose the Polish ‘Bambino’ branding for my carrots, as the ‚St. Majewski’ brand is no longer used on pencils since the company was nationalised nationalised in the 40s, though now I understand it has been re-privatised and is using the name ‘Pencils Factory St. Majewski LLC’. I would love a factory tour!”
