VOID FRACTION - Continuous[dis]Connections’
‘Void Fraction - Continuous[dis]Connections’ is a reflection on the nature and format of collaboration. Void Fraction is an artistic exploration of limestone, limestone quarries and their many by-products, an ongoing collaboration between artists Mari Rose Pritchard and Julie Upmeyer. The project is an investigation of limestone as a window into deep time, present realities and future thinking. This ‘limestone lens’ has enabled the two artists to imagine the tropical sediments of the carboniferous and envision how contemporary actions (extraction, care, neglect, destruction, love, labour) might affect the materials of our geological future.
‘Void Fraction - Continuous[dis]Connections’ features water as a reoccurring theme of the ongoing collaboration, a persistent influence on their work at Aber Quarry on Ynys Môn (Anglesey in North Wales). The film’s imagery and impromptu actions evolved from a series of ‘digital postcards’ – remote performances and responsive prompts connecting the artists across the physical space of the Menai Strait and through social media platforms. The project continues as an ever-accumulating procession of ideas.
The film was selected as part of the inaugural Sleepy Eyes Film Festival in February of 2026 and as part of SMWUD exhibition of moving image in February 2025.
